The castle of Murau in Styria

The renaissance castle in Murau

The Murau castle is only a few walking minutes from the Hotel Gasthof Lercher. The beautiful walk offers magnificent views!

The Murau castle was first mentioned in a document in the year 1250. The old castle of Lichtenstein was probably built in 1356 and torn down in 1628. The castle was in the possession of the Lichtenstein Family for a long time until their ownership was transferred to Anna Neumann von Wasserleonburg. In 1617, she married the count Georg Ludwig zu Schwarzenberg. Count Georg Ludwig zu Schwarzenberg rebuilt the castle in the year 1628 into its present form in Murau. The tetragonal renaissance castle was built without towers in the 17th century.

Especially worth seeing is the chapel, the ancient kitchen, the “cat hall” and the knight’s hall.

Nowadays, you are able to find the forest administration, the castle museum and the archive of the Schwarzenberg in the castle.

Regional dishes are waiting for you in the Hotel Lercher after your tour through the castle. Round off the day with dinner and corresponding wine.

There is a lot to experience during the remaining days of your stay in the region Murau-Kreischberg.
